FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does it take to get certified?

In the case of growers, gaining Organic status for crops may take three years. The Standards outline a 36-month time frame for transitional status. This time is the minimum necessary from the last input of prohibited substances or practices. Pay specific attention to the “notarized declaration form” as it can help you reduce your transition from 3 years to as little as 1 year. For processing facilities, at the very least, and only if all goes well, initial certification can take less than 12 months, and requires two inspections before Certified status may be granted.

How do I know what prohibited inputs are?

The Canadian Standards include an extensive list of possible inputs within the applicable section. This generic list provides a description of the use of the input as well as its standing within the BC Program. There are three classifications of inputs identified as Allowed, Regulated, and Prohibited. This classification system is determined largely by the Organic Materials Review Institute. (OMRI)

Who will come to inspect my farm?

All FVOPA inspectors are current members of the Independent Organic Inspectors Association. (IOIA) This association is responsible for training inspectors world-wide. The inspectors receive accreditation at several levels with the IOIA enabling them to perform inspections on operations from orchards and gardens through to complex processing plants. The inspectors are committed to organic farming practices and exercise the highest level of integrity for confidentiality and professionalism.

How much will it cost me?

Fees are a sliding scale based upon gross organic income (or projected gross organic income). They include COABC membership, FVOPA membership, and Certification Committee reviews. Initial inspection costs are billed separately. Fee’s are payable each season and may change from year to year.
